Marjory Lee Blackman
December 01, 1931 — November 14, 2024
At the age of almost 93, Marjory Lee Blackman passed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Marjory (Marge) was born in Chariton, Iowa, to Neri and Mildred Hart on December 1, 1931. She joined two older sisters in this hardworking, loving home, Jeannie (George Ansley) and Betty (Lyle Askren). Marge had many fond memories of her childhood based on the crazy antics of the three girls. Marge was the tagalong and sometimes instigator of those moments.
In her teenage years, Marge was an active youth, always looking for something to do. On a daily basis in the summer, she and friends would walk from Chariton to the lake on the outskirts of town, swim for a few hours, walk back to town and head to the local roller skating rink in the evening. She was also a drum major in the marching band and a cheerleader for the football team.
Marge fell in love with one of those football players and it was game on for the rest of their lives! She married David C Blackman in 1952. Marge and Dave moved to Knoxville and then to St Louis, MO, for Dave’s schooling for Mortuary Science. They returned to Chariton as Dave joined the family funeral home business. After a few years, Dave turned his attention to obtaining a degree in Education. As a teacher, they landed in several mid- and central Iowa towns: Chariton, Slater, Huxley, and finally Des Moines.
Marge loved her family. During the years, two children came along, David Jr. and Melinda. Marge took pleasure in feeding them, caring for them, defending them, loving them. Marge also extended her motherly care to any friends that the kids would bring home. Marge would whip up a meal or chocolate cake whenever the youth group kids came over – and those kids would come even in blizzards! Marge welcomed a daughter-in-law, Debra (Fulton) Blackman and a son-in-law, the late Melvin Wellen. Marge’s family expanded to include one adored grandchild, Nicole (Preston) Young. Eventually Marge was blessed with what she would claim were the cutest, and-smartest-ever great -grandchildren, Maddie, Tyler, Payton and Dylan. And Marge was still mentally aware and thrilled to welcome a great- great -grandchild in 2023, Wesley.
Marge and Dave were active members at the former First Federated Church where they particularly enjoyed their time with several other couples in Bible study and in lots of eat-outs. In recent years when her health did not allow her to attend church in person, she enjoyed the church service or hymn-sing at her facility.
The last several years, Marge spent in the community and care of Wesley Life’s Brio campus in Johnston including their hospice services in the last few months. While her physical and mental abilities diminished, the staff loved her and treated her so well. (Thank you from the family.)
Marjory was welcomed to her eternal home after a ‘light momentary affliction’ which she knew would pale into insignificance. 2 Corinthians 4:18 – While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: For the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
We will see you again, Mom, as you now gaze on your Savior, Jesus Christ, and on things that are eternal. Praise the Lord – you are at home!
A private family burial and service is planned. Memorial contributions may be designated to Wesley Life Brio Campus Good Samaritan Fund in loving memory of Marge.
